Wolkenstein (1996-35mn) Les plus fameux rappers et danseurs de New York racontent la naissance du streetwear. Le streetwear, c'est une façon de s'habiller qui est née au milieu des années 70 dans les quartiers pauvres de New York et qui est considérée aujourd'hui comme l'une des grandes tendances de la mode. Pour les jeunes des ghettos, en majorité des Noirs ou des hispaniques, la manière de s'habiller a toujours été l'une des rares possibilités de manifester son individualité et son style personnel. Et comme l'on ne pouvait pas se payer des vêtements chers, il fallait faire avec le peu dont on disposait. L'important ce n'était pas ce que l'on portait, mais la manière dont on le portait. |

These people still have their sense of style. It's not about money, it's about how you wear what you have. And in jail because you don't have no belt, because you don't have no shoelace, you still wanna look cool. So, what happened was, guys you know, their pants would naturally sack down. So your underwear would be shown and that was a very big status symbol. And you was like, yo, what's up? you know what I mean? FABLE"What started to happen was that brothers used to wear sweatshirts and have letters put on that represented their groups, the crews and the individual names. (...) and you saw a lot of breakers following the footsteps of the fashion that some of the gang members had set. But then, they took it to the next level. So the crowd could relate to that, more so than me putting on a whole bunch of glitter stuff and singing and they're like, wow, that guy is really far from me. It was, you know, one could communicate with me. We did what, you know, the homeboy in the hood felt. So when they've seen us, they've seen themselves. We did what you wanna do. DELTA "I was just wearing subway-gear, which was just a « hoodie », Lee-jeans and « adidas ». The hoodies were always to disguise ourselves, after we finished a piece and came out of the tunnel and look like transients, you know, like I don't wanna fuck with this guy, he is... leave him alone. Meanwhile we're hiding from the police, from other graffiti-writers, it got to a point where everybody started using a hoodie. You know, just to be down. And plus, in the night time, you get cold, you put a hoodie on, if it gets real cold you put on the top and you're cool.
